One of Japan’s most familiar railway characters is preparing for a major change.
After 25 years alongside commuters and travelers, the famous Suica Penguin is approaching the end of its time as Suica’s image character. JR East has now revealed three possible successors — and instead of choosing the winner privately, the company is asking the public to help decide.
The Suica New Character Vote 2026 officially opened on September 8, giving people in Japan and around the world the opportunity to choose between Character A, Character B, and Character C.
And yes — international fans can vote too.
Why Is Suica Getting a New Character?
The Suica Penguin has been associated with the IC card since Suica launched in 2001.
For many visitors, seeing the little black-and-white penguin on a Suica card has become almost as familiar as seeing Tokyo’s green JR trains.
But JR East is currently working on a wider project known as Suica Renaissance. The company says it wants Suica to evolve from something primarily used for transport and small payments into a broader service that connects more parts of everyday life.
As part of that change, JR East decided that Suica will also receive a new image character.
The Suica Penguin will officially graduate on March 31, 2027, with the winning new character taking over from April 1, 2027.
So this is not an immediate goodbye.
Travelers will continue seeing the Suica Penguin for several more months while JR East celebrates its 25-year history through the ongoing Penguin Years campaign.

Meet the Three Suica Character Finalists
JR East asked younger creators to develop character ideas based on feedback and expectations gathered from employees across the JR East Group.
A selection committee eventually narrowed the designs down to three finalists. JR East says the candidates were chosen with ideas such as being a friendly companion, helping communicate information clearly, and representing the future direction of Suica.
Character A
Character A is an energetic orange squirrel-like character.
The design has a playful appearance and uses a distinctive flowing line through the body and tail.
It feels cheerful, active and easy to recognize — qualities that could work well on cards, station signs, apps and merchandise. The candidate has already attracted attention online because of its expressive face and unusual silhouette.
Character B
Character B is the purple candidate with long rabbit-like ears.
Its design is inspired by the idea of a rabbit moving or jumping toward the future.
Compared with Character A, this design feels softer and slightly more futuristic, which fits JR East's goal of presenting a new generation of Suica services.
Character C
Then there is Character C, another orange-colored candidate.
One of its most distinctive details is the small companion carried in its pouch, described as a mole.
This gives Character C more of a pair or companion-style personality rather than feeling like a single standalone mascot.
There is no winner yet.
The three designs are officially still candidates, so posts claiming that A, B or C has already become the new Suica mascot are incorrect.

How to Vote for the New Suica Character
Voting is quite simple.
JR East's official vote runs from:
September 8, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. JST
to
September 23, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. JST
Each person is allowed one vote only.
Importantly, the vote is not limited to Japanese citizens or people currently living in Japan.
According to JR East's official rules, people can participate regardless of age, gender, occupation or nationality, provided they accept the voting rules and complete the required form.
That means Japan fans overseas can join the decision too.
When Will the Winning Suica Character Be Announced?
You will not have to wait too long.
JR East plans to reveal the winning design on:
November 18, 2026
That date is especially meaningful because it marks 25 years since Suica was introduced in 2001.
The candidate receiving the highest number of valid votes will become the new Suica image character.
But there will still be one important thing missing:
its name.
After the winning design is revealed, JR East plans to invite the public to suggest names for the new character. More details about the naming process are expected to be announced on November 18.
So the public is effectively helping with two parts of Suica's next chapter:
First, choosing what the character looks like.
Then, helping give it a name.
What Happens to the Suica Penguin?
For many people, this may be the emotional part.
The Suica Penguin has represented Suica since its introduction and has appeared across cards, railway advertising, calendars, merchandise and countless promotional campaigns.
JR East is not simply removing the character overnight.
Instead, it is celebrating the penguin through its Penguin Years campaign, which runs through the character's final period. Special goods, campaigns and events have been planned ahead of the farewell.
