Japan luggage forwarding lets you send a suitcase ahead while you travel with a small overnight bag. Hotels can often arrange it, and Yamato Transport’s TA-Q-BIN network also has sales offices and participating drop-off points. The key is to confirm the delivery date before you hand over anything you need tomorrow.
Quick answer: Ask your current hotel to send your bag to the next hotel, give the full hotel name, address and check-in date, and keep the waybill number. Yamato describes standard domestic delivery as next day or two days in many areas, with exceptions. Airport-bound luggage needs a longer lead time: Yamato says drop it off by two days before departure, or three days in some areas, subject to the local sending deadline.
How Japan luggage forwarding works
- Check that the receiving property accepts deliveries. Ask about its name in Japanese, address, telephone number, reservation name and the earliest date it can receive a bag.
- Choose a handover point. Your hotel front desk is often simplest. Yamato sales offices and eligible convenience stores can also accept certain parcels, but acceptance and size limits vary.
- Complete the waybill. Record the destination, sender details, arrival date and a truthful description of contents. Ask staff to check the Japanese address if needed.
- Pay and keep your receipt. Photograph the tracking number and keep your overnight essentials with you.
- Confirm delivery. Ask the next hotel where it holds bags and check tracking if the expected date passes.
For a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka itinerary, you might send a large suitcase from Tokyo to your Kyoto hotel and ride the train with a small backpack. If staying only one night in a city, send the large suitcase to the hotel after that stop and pack enough clothes for the gap. This is a planning example; ask the carrier for the actual route deadline.
Sending a suitcase to or from a Japanese airport
Yamato’s Airport TA-Q-BIN page describes both airport-to-hotel delivery and delivery to airport pickup counters. If you are sending a bag to your departure airport, its published handover deadline is two days before departure, or three days in some areas, and an individual location’s cutoff can be earlier. Confirm the correct terminal, flight date and pickup counter. Leave yourself time to collect the bag before airline check-in.
Sending a bag from the airport to a hotel can make a long train journey more comfortable, but it may arrive after you. Keep medication, identification, a change of clothes and other immediate needs in your hand luggage. How much does luggage forwarding cost?
There is no honest nationwide flat suitcase price. Yamato charges by size and delivery route, with service-specific additions possible. Measure the sum of length, width and height and use the official rate and delivery-time calculator for your origin, destination and bag. Ask the hotel whether it accepts payment at the front desk or whether you will pay the carrier directly.
Yamato says standard TA-Q-BIN accepts parcels up to size 200/30 kg, but some convenience stores cannot take the larger sizes. A bag whose weight exceeds its dimension category is charged in the higher applicable category. Oversized sports gear may use a different service; verify with the carrier instead of assuming ordinary suitcase rules apply.
When should you use a locker instead?
Use a station locker when you only need a few hours of storage and will return to the same place. Use forwarding when your bag should travel to another city or your departure airport.
