Japan travel news · October 7, 2026

Japan has topped the 2026 list of countries favored by readers of the U.S. edition of Condé Nast Traveler. It is the fourth year in a row at No. 1, according to Japan’s national tourism agency. If you are planning your first visit, the interesting question is less whether Japan won a vote and more how to make the trip live up to the expectation.

The 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards country list was released on October 6 in the U.S.; the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced the result on October 7 in Japan. Japan received a published score of 95.52. Italy came second at 94.80 and Ireland third at 94.15.

The 2026 result at a glance

U.S. reader ranking Country Published score
1 Japan 95.52
2 Italy 94.80
3 Ireland 94.15
4 Cambodia 93.57
5 Spain 93.37

There is an important distinction in the small print: this is the U.S. edition’s reader ranking, not a universal verdict from every traveler. In the magazine’s separately published U.K. ranking, Japan placed second behind Greece. Both results can be true because they came from different editions and readerships.

JNTO says the U.S. No. 1 position is Japan’s fourth consecutive win. That streak is newsworthy, but it does not mean every trip will feel effortless. The right route, pace and hotel choices still matter more than a trophy.

What the reader vote actually measures

The magazine’s published methodology says readers submitted ratings through an online survey between April 1 and June 30, 2026. Eligible candidates needed a minimum number of responses and a minimum overall rating. Ratings use a five-point scale that is converted to a percentage-style score; the result is printed to two decimal places.

The magazine reports 798,867 votes across the 2026 awards, which cover many categories, including hotels and cities. That number is for the awards as a whole; it is not a count of people who voted specifically for Japan. The country score is a measure of participating readers’ ratings, not a forecast of prices, crowd levels or the best travel month for you.

For travelers, the useful takeaway is that Japan continues to appeal to an audience that makes deliberate travel choices. The way to benefit from that interest is to plan around the experience you want: city energy, quiet gardens, food, design, rail travel, or a little of each.

How to turn the headline into a good Japan trip

Start with fewer hotel moves

For a first visit of roughly two weeks, Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka make a workable spine. You get the contrast of a vast capital, Kyoto’s historic districts and Osaka’s evening food scene without packing for a new hotel every other night. Tokyo can fill four days easily; Kyoto deserves several mornings, not a rushed overnight; Osaka works as a base for a Nara or Kobe day trip.

With only a week, choose two bases and accept that some famous places will wait. With 14 days, three bases and a genuine rest window give you more room to enjoy what you paid to travel for. Our day-by-day Japan itinerary lays out that longer version.

Choose the places you want to spend time in, not just photograph

In Tokyo, pair one major booking with a neighborhood walk: an exhibition with Harajuku, for example, or a viewpoint with an unhurried Shibuya dinner. In Kyoto, cluster sights by area. Arashiyama’s river and gardens need more time than the short walk through the Bamboo Grove itself. In Osaka, an evening in Dotonbori is memorable, but Tenma or Nakazakicho can give a different view of the city the next day.

For an autumn trip, use the latest 2026 foliage guide as a planning aid, then check actual local conditions closer to your dates. A photograph on an award page is inspiration, not a live view of the leaves.

Make the longer transfers easy

Flying into Tokyo and home from the Osaka area can save a return trip across the country if an open-jaw airfare works for your budget and schedule. On the Tokyo-to-Kyoto day, leave the afternoon flexible for check-in and one nearby walk. If you are carrying large luggage, read the current train baggage rules before booking seats, or look at hotel-to-hotel luggage forwarding.

When to go and what to book first

The award does not identify one perfect season. Spring brings blossoms and high demand; autumn makes city walks and gardens especially attractive; summer asks you to plan for heat and humidity. Start with the dates you can travel, then choose the route that suits those dates. Avoid building the whole holiday around a precise bloom or foliage day months ahead.

  • First, set your flight and hotel bases. Compare a round-trip Tokyo ticket with an arrival in Tokyo and departure from Kansai International Airport, including the total fare and airport transfers.
  • Then reserve the experiences with fixed entry. For example, viewpoints, museums or a specific restaurant you care deeply about. Check the venue’s own site for its current ticket window.
  • Finally, leave ordinary meals and neighborhood walks loose. A well-planned trip has room for the little shop or side street you did not know about before landing.

One practical warning about rankings: a popular country contains popular choke points. At a busy temple or station, give the people who live and work there space. Move a street or two away from the main photo stop, and you may find the moment you remember better.

Quick questions

Was Japan voted the best country in the world in 2026?

Japan ranked first on Condé Nast Traveler’s 2026 U.S. readers’ list of countries, with a published score of 95.52. In the separate U.K. edition, Japan ranked second.

How many people voted for Japan?

The awards reported 798,867 votes in total across many categories. The published country list and methodology do not give a Japan-only vote count, so the overall figure should not be presented as Japan’s total.

Is 14 days enough for a first Japan trip?

Yes, if you keep the hotel moves sensible. Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka over two weeks allow several full days in each base and one nearby day trip. A shorter trip can still be excellent with fewer bases.
