Last checked: 27 September 2026. Shinkansen luggage rules in 2026 depend on the total size of your bag. Before booking a Tokaido, Sanyo or Kyushu Shinkansen trip, add your suitcase’s height, width and depth. A case whose three sides add up to more than 160 cm and no more than 250 cm needs a seat reservation with an oversized baggage area. The reservation has no extra charge beyond the reserved-seat fare; arriving with oversized baggage and no suitable reservation can trigger a ¥1,000 fee. JR Central explains the rule here.

Quick decision: what should you book?
- 160 cm or less: an ordinary seat is normally fine. Put the bag on the overhead rack, at your feet if it fits safely, or in a permitted deck storage area. Do not block the aisle.
- 161–250 cm: reserve a “seat with an oversized baggage area” before travel. This applies on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu routes, including common Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka journeys.
- Over 250 cm: do not bring the item on board. Arrange delivery or another transport option.
The measurement is the sum of the outside dimensions, including protruding parts. For example, a suitcase measuring 75 × 50 × 35 cm totals 160 cm; a 78 × 52 × 35 cm case totals 165 cm and needs the special reservation. Measure your actual packed case rather than relying on its advertised “large” or “medium” label.
Where the rule applies
JR Central describes the requirement for the Tokaido–Sanyo–Kyushu Shinkansen corridor from Tokyo through Shin-Osaka and Hakata toward Kagoshima-Chuo. How to reserve the right seat
- Measure each bag separately and decide whether any one bag exceeds 160 cm in total.
- While booking, select “seat with an oversized baggage area” rather than a standard reserved seat. JR Central says this can be done online, at a reserved-seat ticket machine or at a JR ticket office.
- If using a rail pass, ask the staff for an oversized-baggage-area seat when making your seat reservation; a pass alone does not assign the space.
- Check the seat designation on your ticket. The space behind the last row is for the passengers who reserved those seats and is shared with other eligible passengers.
The SmartEX baggage instructions show the booking option. Special seats are limited, so book early for busy departures. If none remains, choose another train or send the suitcase ahead. Do not assume an empty last-row space is available to anyone.
What if your bag is 160 cm or smaller?
No oversized-baggage seat is required under this rule. But a case that technically qualifies may still be awkward to lift. JR Central says its overhead racks can generally hold luggage around 160 cm in total dimensions, while a smaller bag of around 120 cm may fit at your feet, depending on the traveler. If lifting or legroom will be difficult, choosing a reserved baggage-area seat can make the journey easier. Keep access routes and doors clear.
Strollers, sports gear and instruments
JR Central says these items are exempt from the ordinary oversized-suitcase reservation rule, subject to its carry-on limits. You still need the appropriate seat reservation if you plan to use the designated oversized baggage area behind the last row. Check the operator’s full conditions for unusually shaped items before travel.
Practical option: send the suitcase ahead

Does a 160 cm suitcase need the special seat?
JR Central’s summary says luggage up to 160 cm does not. The reservation rule applies when the sum exceeds 160 cm. If your measurement is on the boundary, remeasure with wheels and handles included.
Is the baggage-area seat more expensive?
JR Central says there is no surcharge for the baggage-area designation itself. You pay the relevant reserved-seat fare. Bringing an oversized bag without the required reservation can lead to a ¥1,000 charge.
Can I use an unreserved car with an oversized suitcase?
Do not plan on it. JR Central says passengers with oversized baggage must book a designated seat and cannot use an unreserved seat without that facility.
